Living on Campus: Apartment Edition

By Abigail Vinas on November 14, 2013

Out of the dorms? You’ve got two choices for your next home: living on campus in an apartment or getting your own place off-campus. As with any situation, both sides have their perks. After sharing an on-campus apartment with three roommates for the past month and a half, I’ve compiled a short list of pros and cons.
Pros:
  • Everything is easily accessible  you’re within walking distance from computer labs, libraries, classes, etc. There’s no need to wait for a bus to take you to campus or drive yourself and spend time looking for a parking spot. You’re already on campus so that’s your extra push to actually go to class. So change out of your pajamas, grab your backpack, and go to class like a good student.
  • Furniture is provided. You don’t have to lug your own beds, chairs, couches, and tables from home. The basics are already there, now all you need is to bring the extra luxury items, i.e. a television. It’s pretty sweet.
  • You have somewhere to go during your breaks. This is especially useful if you’re someone with breaks in your schedule that last for several hours. You don’t have to pass the time in a cafe or library because now you can just go back home and relax until your next class.

Cons:

  • Living on campus in an apartment means you have your own kitchen, which means you have to wash your own dishes. Well, unless you have a five- or seven-day meal plan, that is. At the dining hall, you use ‘em and someone else washes ‘em. At your apartment, you are responsible for your own dirty dishes. And don’t let them pile up for days at a time. That won’t be a pretty picture. You won’t want to be the one who has to clean it all.
  • Having company over means feeding them. Now this doesn’t happen every time you have friends over, but it does happen. You end up cooking for a party of eight instead of four or giving out snacks and water bottles to be nice. Then as the days go by, you’re going through your fridge and kitchen cabinets, looking for something to eat, and you think, Where the hell did all the food go? and then you remember.
